The Insanity of Reproductive Health

I’m a nurse working in a government hospital, and for most days how I wish I could shove the placentas of those women who give birth in front of those in the Church and everybody who are against family planning, how I wish that they were working in government hospitals all over the country and feel the desperation, insanity and foolishness of the blindness these people give to our leaders with regard to the basic truth that everybody has the right to choose and decide for themselves, hence the right to choose to space the number of children they will have.

PSORHN Nurses to join DOH Budget Deliberations
Manila, Philippines - As a result of the passage of the Sin Tax Law, the share of health in the proposed 2014 national budget increased by 45.5%. Part of the continuing budget work of advocates is to look at where the resources will be spent on.
The Health Cluster of Alternative Budget Initiative together with different civil society organizations will be present to the Department of Health presentation of its proposed budget for the FY 2014, 13 August 2013, 9:00am-12:00nn at the Duque Hall, Department of Health Central Office, Tayuman, Sta. Cruz Manila.
The Philippine Society of Sexual & Reproductive Health Nurses (PSORHN) is one of the organizations who shall be sitting in the budget deliberations. We are hoping that there will be an increase in the investment in health human resources especially to the nurses in public health.

Teen Pregnancy on the rise: Call for collective action
Around the world, the rate of teen pregnancy is on the rise.
In the ASEAN region, the Philippines has the third highest teen
pregnancy rate and it is only in the Philippines where the rate in teen
pregnancy has increased. If the future of a country lies in the hands of
its young people, what are the long term implications of the issue of
teen pregnancy? What are the implications to health and lives of young
mothers? Is there really cause for alarm?

Attending to mothers in the labor room is a common role for the graduating student-nurse. While waiting inside the room, I often ask my clients whether it is their first time to have a baby or not.
Often, patients in the delivery room are multi-parous(has delivered more than one child). Jokingly, I ask them why they want more children. I get various answers in return, some of them attuned to boredom, ‘can’t get enough’, accidents in bed and to some ‘the more the merrier’.
The Scottish Career Framework for Nursing in Sexual and Reproductive Health
Nurses are increasingly involved in the planning, delivery and evaluation of care to individuals within a sexual and reproductive health setting. This care will involve the management of complex emotional and physical conditions and as such requires advanced level communication skills, clinical competence underpinned by a sound education and research base and delivered through strong and visible leadership.
The development of this Career Framework for Nursing in Sexual and Reproductive Health will assist senior nurses and service leads identify the practice and competence required to provide a high quality of care and allow for the benchmarking of existing roles.
Nurse Practitioners and sexual and reproductive health services: An analysis of supply and demand
By Diana Taylor
I recently had the pleasure of serving as co-author to a new report from the RAND Corporation, titled Nurse Practitioners and Sexual and Reproductive Health Services: An Analysis of Supply and Demand.
A brief summary: Current trends in supply and demand for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, particularly for low-income individuals, suggest a growing gap in the next decade, with demand outstripping supply of competent health professionals. The reasons for this gap are tied less to the production of clinicians overall and more to a reduced production of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) trained to deliver SRH care.

PSORHN History & Founding Members
PSORHN takes its history two years ago when a couple of nurses became actively involved in the Reproductive Health Bill advocacy and campaign. These nurses recognized the need for an organized group to continue the advocacy and saw the need to specialize on sexual & reproductive health and rights (SRHR) going beyond maternal & child health.
This group of nurses launched an online campaign group known as RNs for RH which was largely operating in a social networking site known as Facebook. During the initial stages of conceptualizing for PSORHN, it took the name Reproductive Health Nurses Association of the Philippines (RHNAP) but later was changed to PSORHN since majority of the active founding members agreed to use of Society instead of Association.
