PSORHN Soft Launches through 1st batch of BORHN Course

Manila, Philippines - The Philippine Society of Sexual & Reproductive Health Nurses will launch the newly-formed specialty society of nurses focusing on providing sexual & reproductive health in the Philippines through the pioneering batch of the Basic Orientation on Reproductive Health Nursing Course (BORHN). 

BORHN is a 4-hour introductory course on human sexuality, sexual and reproductive health, the RH Law, and the role of nurses in sexual & reproductive health. BORHN is a qualifying course for all interested nurses to become members of the Society. All members of the Society are expected to graduate from this introductory course.

The BORHN Course has the following components:

A. Introduction to Sexuality & Reproductive Health (1.5 hours)
  • What is Reproductive Health? What is Sexuality? 
  • 10 Principles of Reproductive Health
  • Dimensions & sub-specialities of reproductive health
  • MDGs and SRHR
  • Basics of Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity
  • Comprehensive Sexuality Education

B. The Reproductive Health Law (1 hour)
  • Sections of the RPRH Law
  • Summary of Major Provisions
  • Role of Nurses in RPRH Law
  • Prohibited Acts
  • Other important laws governing SRHR practice

C. Role of nurses in SRHR and SRH Nursing (1 hour)
  • What is sexual & reproductive health nursing?
  • Roles of nurses in SRH care
  • Areas of service for RH nurses
The BORHN Course is mandatory to all members of the Society. Every member should have had one BORHN Course to qualify them to Level 1 membership. After taking the introductory course, all PSORHN members are then required to complete 3 Foundation Courses (Fundamentals of Sexual & Reproductive Health, Fundamentals of HIV Care, and Fundamentals of SRH Policies). 

These Foundation Courses shall help the RH Nurses who are members of PSORHN to further develop their interest in SRH Nursing and to later set their field of sub-specialtis (eg. adolescent health, women's health, men's health, etc.) 

The BORHN Course shall be handled by PSORHN's President & CEO Alvin Dakis, SRHN, one of the member of the Technical Working Group of the Senate Committee on Health that finalized the Reproductive Health Bill. He was also one of the members who finalized the Implementing Rules & Regulations (IRR) of the RH Law.
